Sargian, Peggy; Andral, Bruno; Derolez, Valerie.

The coastal zone of the Nord – Pas de Calais / Picardie showed dysfonctioning patterns of the ecosystem considered to be link to human activities along shores. These results in regular massive development of species, such as the phytoplanktonic seaweed, Phaeocystis sp. which life cycle was partly linked to nutrients availability and consequently to anthropogenic inputs. As part of the evaluation of the influence of continental inputs on the marine environment (nitrates, phosphates,…) and on potential eutrophication processes, of the estimation of the efficiency of the sewage treatments plants in the possible elimination of dumpings and in order to establish a long-term survey to follow up the change in coastal waters quality, the regional nutrients...

Seasonal variability in microplanktonic biomasses in the Gironde dilution plume (Bay of Biscay): relative importance of bacteria ArchiMer
Artigas, Lf.
Bacterial and phytoplankton biomasses were estimated in a four-year study along a saline gradient (the dilution plume of the Gironde estuary on the Aquitanian continental shelf), by measuring bacterial abundance and mean cell volumes (epifluorescence counts) and chlorophyll-a concentrations tin vitro fluorescence). The spatial and temporal distribution of phytoplankton enabled us to determine the seasonal succession of algal blooms, sprouting in the marine waters of the inner shelf in early spring (picoplanktonic forms), reaching their annual maximum (10 mu g L-1) in plume waters in advanced spring, and moving to estuarine waters in the summer (> 20 mu m forms). Bacterial biomasses followed mainly a decreasing dilution gradient, especially in winter and...

The repetitive and expanding occurrence of a green, bloom-forming dinoflagellate (Dinophyceae) on the coasts of France ArchiMer
Sournia, Alain; Belin, Catherine; Billard, Chantal; Catherine, Martial; Erard-le Denn, Evelyne; Fresnel, Jacqueline; Lassus, Patrick; Pastoureaud, Annie; Soulard, René.
A dinoflagellate has produced green-water events along the Atlantic and English Channel coasts of France since 1982. It differs morphologically from each of the 12 taxa or so of green gymnodinoid dinoflagellates previously known. As some morphological details, as well as their variability, remain to be ascertained, this organism is illustrated and described here under the provisional designation of Gymnodinium "sp. 1982". The presence of chlorophyll b has been confirmed by HPLC analysis but it could not be ascertained whether true chloroplasts are present, or symbionts. The distribution is coastal and estuarine. The number and intensity of the outbreaks may be related to river runoff and to the amount of preceding rainfall. An encysted stage is described....

Leruste, Amandine.
Located at the interface between marine and continental systems, coastal lagoons are among the most diverse and productive ecosystems. These semi-enclosed ecosystems are very vulnerable to nutrient enrichment. In the Languedoc-Roussillon region, anthropogenic pressures have profoundly damaged the coastal lagoons, especially those belonging to the Palavasian complex close to Montpellier. The latter lagoons have been affected by high nutrient loadings from the sewage treatment plant of the Montpellier agglomeration. This resulted in a trophic gradient among the eight lagoons in the complex, from mesotrophy to hypertrophy, with altered primary producer communities by favoring the predominance of the phytoplankton compartment. The phytoplankton responds very...

The goal of this study is to investigate about the possibility of coupling measurements made by image analysis from the FlowCAM with Zoo/PhytoImage with data obtained with a flux cytometer (pulse-shape-recording Scanning Flow Cytometry) on the same samples gathered in current monitoring networks in the eastern Channel and southern North Sea. In this preliminary study, we collected a series of samples off Boulogne-sur-Mer (SRN-REPHY monitoring system run by IFREMER) and along a transect in the Baie St-Jean (Wimereux-Slack) run by LOG. All these samples were digitized with a FlowCAM and measured with a scanning flow cytometer (CytoSense). The complete analysis with the FlowCAM and Zoo/PhytoImage is detailed in the present report. In order to get a better...

Action 3. Indice Composition. Livrable n° B. Rapport final, juillet 2014. ArchiMer
Goffart, Anne; Andral, Bruno.
The aim of this study is to show the current status of the development and use of the new IC Medit phytoplankton composition index as a sub-metric within the phytoplankton quality element in assessing phytoplankton quality in Mediterranean coastal waters. IC Medit uses pigment concentrations determined by HPLC for assessing phytoplankton composition. Focusing on coastal waters of Corsica, we (i) described the seasonal succession of the main phytoplankton groups in reference conditions, (ii) studied responses of phytoplankton groups to well identified drivers, (iii) assessed the shift of the seasonal succession of phytoplankton groups from the reference conditions in impacted areas, (iv) revealed pressure / impact relationships between nutrients and...

Variability and seasonality of physical and biological fields at the Great Meteor Tablemount (subtropical NE Atlantic) ArchiMer
Mourino, B; Fernandez, E; Serret, P; Harbour, D; Sinha, B; Pingree, R.
Five oceanographic surveys were conducted at the Great Meteor Tablemount (subtropical NE Atlantic; 30.0 degreesN, 28.5 degreesW) throughout the 1992-1999 period tc, investigate temporal variability in the relationship between the physical structure of the water column associated with the seamount and phytoplankton biomass and/or production rates. Local increases in chlorophyll a, enhanced carbon incorporation rates and changes in phytoplankton species composition were associated with the seamount. These effects were subjected to a large degree of temporal and spatial variability both at seasonal and shorter time scales.

Vertical distribution of phytoplankton communities and relationships with physico-chemical parameters resolved by a fine scale sampler ArchiMer
Lunven, Michel; Guillaud, Jean-francois; Youenou, Agnes; Crassous, Marie-pierre; Berric, Roger; Le Gall, Erwan; Kerouel, Roger; Labry, Claire; Aminot, Alain.
Many studies in coastal areas have shown the existence of thin chemical and biological layers. Their thickness and vertical extension are mainly controlled by hydrological and physical forcing. An accurate description of the phytoplankton communities growing within these layers is difficult to obtain without a well-adapted sampling system. A new Fine Scale Sampler (FSS) has been designed in Ifremer in order to study phytoplankton distribution and associated dissolved properties in high stratified water column. This FSS consists in a vertical array of 15 sampling bottles, horizontally laid with 20 cm intervals. Data acquired from a CTD and Fluorescence probe provide a precise FSS positioning at the depth of highest density gradient or at chlorophyll a...

Grastilleur, Charlotte; Arnich, Nathalie; Belin, Catherine.
Official routine monitoring of phycotoxins and toxinproducing algae is regularly implemented in the marine environment through phytoplankton identification in water samples, as well as by official analysis in shellfish in order to verify compliance with the maximum limits set in regulation (EC) no.853/2004. These activities are conducted by the official REPHY network, coordinated by IFREMER (French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea). As for other food safety hazards, the issue of emerging and non-regulated hazards needs to be fully addressed in addition to the ongoing above-mentioned surveillance efforts. This issue was submitted to ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) in the surveillance framework...
